Get ready

Have beside you: a Bible open at Deuteronomy 6:4 and the picture below. Show it on this page or use a printed copy. If you cannot show the picture, use your own sitting place and a pillow as you describe its three moments.

Moses was speaking to Israel, God's people, before they entered the land God had promised them. He told them to love the Lord with their whole lives and to talk about his words while sitting at home, walking, lying down and getting up. Today's picture helps you make those familiar moments visible.

Open the Bible together

Bible background

Read Deuteronomy 6:4–9 for the setting of the short verse. Jesus repeats its command in Mark 12:29–30; John 14:6–11 explains that he reveals the Father and brings us to him. “One God” does not mean the Father alone is God: the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are the one God, not three gods or three parts of God.

Let your child see the open Bible. Point to verse 4 and say, “These words come from the Bible. Let's listen.” Read slowly from your Bible:

Read aloud

“Listen, Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.”

Deuteronomy 6:4, CSB

Explain in your own words:

“Moses was talking to God's people. The LORD is the one true God. We can know him and love him.”

Keep the Bible open beside you while you look at the picture.

Look at the picture together

Three scenes show the same young child: reading an open Bible with his mother on a blue sofa, walking and talking with her outdoors, and talking with his father beside his bed at night.
Sitting together, walking, settling for bed: ordinary moments to remember God.

“This picture shows a family during its day. Let's see what they are doing.”

  1. Find the open Bible. “What are they looking at?” Point to the book if your child needs help, then to your own Bible. “They can learn about the one true God from the Bible. So can we.”
  2. Find the walking feet. Let your child point or gently march on the spot with you. “They have gone outside. They can still talk about the same God while they walk.”
  3. Find the pillow. “What part of the day is this?” Help with “bedtime” if needed. “They can talk to God at bedtime too. There isn't a different god for bedtime. There is one true God.”

You can explore one scene at a time, following what catches your child's attention.

Find a place in your home

Invite your child to choose one place like a place in the picture: somewhere you sit, somewhere you walk, or somewhere you rest. Visit it together. Ask, “Can we talk about God here too?” Supply the answer warmly: “Yes. The same one true God deserves our love here too.”

To explore the same idea while seated, let your child choose a scene or hold a pillow as you talk about remembering God at bedtime.

Return to the open Bible. Say, “Jesus, God's Son, also taught people to love the one true God. Jesus brings us to the Father. We can trust him.”

Pray together

“Let's talk to God now.” Pray while your child listens. Invite them to join a word or add their own words if they wish.

“Lord, you are the one true God. Help us to know you and love you. Thank you for Jesus, who brings us to you. Amen.”

Remember during the day

At one ordinary moment, recall the matching scene: “Remember the child getting ready for bed? We can talk to the one true God now too.” Say a short prayer together.

Notice the connection: Point to two scenes and ask, “Are they learning about a different god in each place, or the same God?” Help with “The same one true God.” For a child ready to explain, ask, “Where could we talk about God tomorrow?”
