Heralds at Sunday School

Understand the Scriptures you teach. Help children and young people discover who God is, hear the good news of Jesus Christ and learn to trust and follow Him.

Bible teaching that builds understanding

We want the next generation to know the God revealed in Scripture, understand why they need Jesus and put their confidence in Him. That calls for teaching with depth and a clear direction: the teacher understands the passage, the lesson opens its meaning, and the learners work with the truth they have heard.

Our lesson plans bring these three aims together. Little Ones offers one 59-lesson plan for ages 2 through Grade R. Junior primary, senior primary and high school each offer a choice of 25-lesson plans. Follow your stage's material at your group's pace, building on earlier learning and returning to important truths.

Equip the teacher

Understanding the passage gives you a reason for what you say. You can explain its truth in your own words, recognise a mistaken answer and help a child with an honest question. The Overview gives you your bearings; Teacher preparation guides you into the passage's setting, its theology, what it reveals about God and people, and its place in God's saving purpose through Christ.

The preparation also invites you to reflect and pray. The Word you teach addresses your own life. In the primary and high-school stages, allow 15–20 minutes to read the article, with further time for Scripture, reflection and rehearsal. Little Ones has its own shorter preparation and practical setup guide. You enter the classroom with a message you understand and have considered personally.

Shape the lesson

A connected lesson helps learners follow how the passage leads to its central truth. Its movements build towards one message: what God says and does, what this means, how it leads us to Christ, and the response it calls for. Earlier details support what comes next, so the children can explain why the conclusion follows.

The Lesson brings that direction into the classroom through full Bible readings, clear explanations, questions, likely answers and useful transitions. Suggested wording supports your teaching, while Downloads supplies the practical resources. You can rehearse the whole lesson and see how each part serves its purpose.

Engage the learners

Children show what they understand as they notice, question, make, arrange and explain. Purposeful participation gives you something to listen to and build on. A practical task returns younger children to a detail in the passage; older learners can investigate its meaning, weigh an explanation and consider how it guides a decision. Each stage has its own teaching, questions and activities.

Memory work joins words to meaning, and the closing explanation connects the learners' work to Scripture. We want them to understand the good news of Christ, recognise their need of grace and respond with faith, worship and obedience. You teach, listen and return to what needs explaining, praying for the Holy Spirit to work through His Word.
